Ordesa y Monte Perdido (3,355 m), Aragón, Spanish Pyrenees
Travelling from the picturesque Ossau valley, which is renowned for its stunning landscapes and rich natural beauty, you will embark on a journey over the majestic Col du Pourtalet. This mountain pass, nestled in the Pyrenees, offers breathtaking views and a sense of adventure as you navigate through its winding roads. Once you have crossed the pass, your route will lead you towards the charming town of Biescas. As you approach Biescas, take a moment to appreciate the quaint architecture and the serene atmosphere that envelops this small town. Here, you will need to turn left onto the N-260, a scenic road that will guide you towards Broto, another delightful destination in the region. Before leaving the enchanting little town of Broto, make sure to take a brief detour to soak in its unique charm. This town, with its traditional stone houses and the backdrop of the towering mountains, is a perfect spot to pause and enjoy the local culture. After your visit, turn left onto the A135, which will lead you towards Torla-Ordesa. This route is particularly interesting as it showcases the stunning natural beauty of the area, with lush green valleys and dramatic cliffs that characterise the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park. Surprisingly, despite the relatively low traffic on the roads during our numerous visits to the Ordesa region, you will find that Torla-Ordesa is quite a busy town. This bustling atmosphere is a testament to its popularity among tourists and nature enthusiasts alike, drawn to the breathtaking landscapes and the plethora of outdoor activities available in and around the national park.
The dramatic transformation of the landscape becomes evident with majestic cliffs and the road leading to Monte Perdido, the third-highest peak in the Pyrenees. This peak attracts climbers and nature enthusiasts with its rugged terrain and stunning views.
Known as the Pyrenean Grand Canyon, the region features deep canyons and the cirque, a bowl-shaped geological feature, alongside the French cirques of Garvanie. These formations, with their impressive rock structures and lush greenery, offer a visual spectacle that changes with the light, providing endless opportunities for photographers and nature lovers.
The village of Broto, nestled in the foothills, serves as a gateway to this natural wonderland. Its traditional architecture and warm hospitality make it an ideal base for exploring the landscapes and engaging with the local culture.
Ordesa National Park's kilometre-deep canyons and +3,000-metre peaks are best explored on foot. Hiking trails of varying difficulty reveal the park's diverse ecosystem, where waterfalls and rare wildlife abound. The serene atmosphere, filled with natural sounds, invites exploration and reflection, offering breathtaking views and lasting memories of the Pyrenees.
Located high in the central Pyrenees, Ordesa is Spain's oldest protected area and has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status due to its natural beauty and untouched environment. For hikers, it is a true paradise, featuring magnificent mountain landscapes that culminate in the remarkable Ordesa Canyon, along with a rich variety of wildlife and plant life.
The region is renowned for its 'flat paths' that weave through the towering limestone cliffs. Some of these paths are strikingly narrow, while others are more gentle and accessible for everyone.
The Ordesa National Park boasts four deep canyons. Ordesa and Pineta are shaped by glaciers, whereas Añisclo and the Garganta de Escuain have been carved by rivers. The hiking experience varies significantly in each of these areas.
We enjoyed a long, sunny trail run in the valley, taking in the stunning mountain scenery below the massive rock wall above Ordesa Valley. Besides hiking and running, Ordesa offers other adventures like climbing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, canyoning, gravel riding, and horseback riding.
It's a physical challenge: your arms and back will ache, and the trail demands full concentration and commitment. Trails around Ordesa are moderately challenging and swoopy, though some parts require extra caution for inexperienced hikers.
The lower slopes of the valleys are forested with beech, fir, and Scots pine, with their distribution varying based on the valley's orientation and characteristics.

We always stay at the Río Ara Ordesa, a charming accommodation that offers a unique blend of comfort and tranquillity. At the entrance to the campsite, a magnificent spring of icy water reminds them that they are in the natural environment of the peripheral area of the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, modified only in the essentials, so it is still almost virgin.
Additionally, the Bujaruelo Valley is highly valued for its scenic beauty, rivalling that of Ordesa and, on the French side, the valleys of Gavarnie and Artouste.
